Many adults in Texas cannot take advantage of regular adult education services for a variety of reasons:
    • the learning center is too far away;
    • transportation is not available;
    • there is no childcare;
    • work schedules conflict with class times;
    • a student has a physical disability.

Other adult education students use distance learning to accelerate or intensify face-to-face instruction. These students enroll in a distance education class while they are taking a regular class.

Local service providers now offer instruction to students like this in ABE, ASE, and ESL using the Approved List of Distance Curriculum. Approved curricula are available for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Participation in the distance learning state initiative continues to grow in Texas. At the end of the 2012 program year, 50 out of 55 adult education cooperatives were providing a distance education, serving more than 8,000 students.

Texas adults who are interested in learning more about enrolling in distance learning classes are encouraged to visit the TCALL Provider Directory to locate the adult education co-ops or literacy providers in their area or click here to view an interactive map. Once a potential adult education center is identified, interested adults can contact that particular adult education co-op or literacy center to inquire about distance courses.
