Accelerate TEXAS
Advancing Adult Students into Careers
The Texas Workforce Commission and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board are collaborating to expand the innovative Adult Basic Education program, Accelerate Texas in four workforce areas that have been impacted by large numbers of worker layoffs. TWC has invested one million dollars of Department of Labor funding in four workforce areas:
-
South Texas College (Lower Rio Grade) (177 layoffs)
-
Amarillo College (Panhandle) (223 layoffs)
-
Tarrant County College( Tarrant County) (1,462 layoffs)
-
Hill College (Heart of Texas) (1,310 layoffs)
Capitalizing on the importance of providing adult education students with direct, and well-articulated pathways to training and resulting higher incomes, Accelerate TEXAS has awarded grants to 21 community colleges across Texas. Together, these grantees have already engaged over 3,000 adults in programs leading to just under 2000 certificates (42% Level 1) in the key industry sectors of health care, manufacturing, construction, and transportation. TWC is please to augment and support these efforts over the coming year.
