TEXAS Adult Education & Literacy Leadership Excellence AcademY

Application Information:

  • Administrator Leadership applicants must be recommended by their director (or be self-nominated) and approved by the AEL State Director and MUST complete the Nomination and Commitment Form linked at bottom.
  • Instructional Leadership applicants must be nominated by their director and should be in an Instructional Leadership position and MUST complete the Nomination and Commitment Form linked at bottom.

Program Expectations:

Nominators
  • Make the commitment for self or other staff member to participate in and attend the Texas Leadership Excellence Academy
  • Nominate self or other candidates
  • Support Administrator or Instructional Leader who is attending the training
  • Support the implementation of the TX LEA project

 
LEA Participants
  • Participate in the Leadership Excellence Academy forum (Community of Practice in PD Portal)
  • Engage in intensive training through May 2025
  • Facilitate creation, delivery and implementation of the Leadership project
  • Align and implement the Leadership project to AEL program’s instructional content
  • Provide feedback on the Academy

 

Criteria for Selection:

  • Must be in an administrator or instructional lead position within the AEL program
  • Desire to be a successful leader and acquire additional leadership skills
  • Desire to improve program based on self-assessment and program data
  • Motivation and passion toward program improvement
  • Willingness to commit time and energy to project completion
  • Flexibility
  • Can effectively implement best practices
  • Understands challenges of AEL
  • Great people skills—Can adapt approach to staff with different needs
  • Preparedness—Knowledge of AEL program needs

Upon completion of training, Leadership Excellence Academy participants will:

  • Identify and apply leadership concepts addressed in the Academy
  • Identify individual opportunities for improvement based on self-assessment and program data
  • Acquire skills and support to lead a program improvement initiative
  • Explain and implement one of several collaboration models
  • Describe strategies to support initiative, persistence and planning
  • Use data analysis to make decisions
  • Receive a Certificate of Completion.

Following is the Project Timeline for the Texas Instructional Leadership Excellence Academies:

Local programs will provide all costs and travel-related expenses to the face-to-face training.

  • Overview of LEA, timeline, and expectations
  • Our approach: “Leadership Framework Wheel”
  • Transformational Leadership & Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) leadership styles
  • Leadership vision statement
  • Teamwork Strategies: COMPASS
  • Overview of improvement project
  • Intro to the Portal & Assignments

Small Group Meetings This webinar will provide an opportunity for individuals to report on their project and progress and solicit specific feedback and advice. (selection of one date is required)
4/09/25- 2:00 - 3:15 pm CST Webinar 4 Participants will hear from a practitioner panel on leading a team in data-based decision making and collaboratively looking at data for program improvement.
5/02/25 -8:30 am – 3:30 pm CST Session 3 (F2F) In this final session, participants will revisit their personal vision statements and Leadership Wheel, present the outcomes from their improvement projects, and receive and give feedback to colleagues.
